GreenStreet Offers a Different Spin on a Night Out in Downtown Houston

HOUSTON, TEXAS (July 24, 2014) – The year’s more than halfway over, but things at GreenStreet are just getting started as the downtown mixed-use destination – whose anchor tenants include House of Blues and Forever XXI – continues to expand its offerings of free onsite events for visitors. New this season will be a unique spin on an outdoor movie series, complete with look-a-like contests and fun, prize giveaways, as well as a weekly line-up of live concerts from some of the region’s hottest entertainers. Additional highlights to catch this season include musical performances from the High School for Visual and Performing Arts and the continuation of a new way to enjoy happy hour, Games on the Green. Catch these and more on The Lawn, GreenStreet’s new outdoor entertainment green space located just steps from McCormick & Schmick’s patio.

Friday Flicks on The Lawn

One of the most anticipated series coming to GreenStreet this season will be the project’s new take on watching an outdoor movie. In addition to featuring pop culture movie classics such as The Big Lebowski and Blues Brothers, movie attendees also are encouraged to dress up as their favorite lead characters for a chance to win prizes from onsite tenants Lucy Strike, House of Blues and others. As an added bonus, attendees also will receive complimentary popcorn to enjoy during each movie, courtesy of Zipcar Houston. Last Tuesday Concert Series with the High School for Performing and Visual Arts (HSPVA)

It’s a source of great pride when we can witness young Houstonians following and excelling in their passions, and this season, GreenStreet is honored to feature a variety of performances from the talented group of students and alumni from High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (HSPVA).  This special series will take place the last Tuesday of each month from 5-7PM with HSPVA’s Summer Jazz Quartet – featuring  Blake Opper on saxophone, Austin Thomas on keyboard, John Koozin on bass, and Andrew Sneed on drums – taking center stage on The Lawn on Tuesday, July 29. The four musicians are accomplished recent graduates of The High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. John Koozin, Blake Opper and Andrew Sneed, a student at The University of North Texas, were all selected to various Texas Music Education Association All-State ensembles.  Austin Thomas was selected to the 2014 Grammy Camp Jazz Ensemble and will attend The University of Texas in the fall. John Koozin and Blake Opper will attend The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. The jazz program at The High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Houston, Texas, is a legendary training ground for professional artists. Live Music Concert Series

Rounding out the music selection at GreenStreet will be an extended schedule of live outdoor concerts on The Lawn with a wide range of music for all to enjoy! Stretch out on McCormick & Schmick’s newly renovated outdoor patio or grab a seat out on The Lawn for a free weekly live concert every Thursday and Friday, from 5-8PM. Performances include:

A New Way to do Happy Hour – “Games on the Green”

It’s time to loosen that tie and slip on some flats as GreenStreet presents one of its most distinctive events this year – Games on the Green on Thursday, August 21 from 5-8PM. Watch as The Lawn transforms itself into a playground for adult fun, including nostalgic games such as bocce balls and horseshoes. Other activities include a giant Jenga and oversized chess set. Additional amenities include happy hour drinks and bites available just steps away at McCormick & Schmicks, while Lucky Strikes will offer a special interactive booth right on The Lawn complete with fun, games and prizes. Add these plus the addition of live music and you’ve got an evening that’s anything but uneventful! Admission to Games on the Green is FREE and open to the public. Can’t make it in August? Don’t worry. Games on the Green will take place the third Thursday of each month through November.

Barkitecture Houston

Dog-lovers can once again mark their calendars for a weekend full of canine–related fun as Barkitecture Houston returns for its sixth year to GreenStreet, October 17-18. The annual doghouse designing event, benefitting Pup Squad Animal Rescue, will feature one-of-a-kind, custom-built doghouses for sale – all created by teams composed of local artists, designers and architecture firms from the Bayou City. While bidding on these artful creations, event-goers also will enjoy the chance to mingle with fellow pet-lovers during special “Yappy Hour” complete with live music, raffle prizes and other free entertainment scattered across The Lawn. Admission to the event is FREE and open to the public, but a voluntary donation directly benefitting Pup Squad is welcomed. Onsite event parking also is available in the attached garage located at 1301 Main Street, with entrances located at the corner of Polk and Fannin.

Complimentary Boot Camp Classes

With Houston Restaurant Weeks just around the corner, many of us are going to have to kick our workout routines up a notch or two and GreenStreet’s got your back, literally! Enjoy a convenient and FREE boot camp class on The Lawn every Wednesday, from 6:30AM-7AM. No equipment is needed and classes are open to all skill-levels.

Fashion Trucks

Whether you’re shopping for a last-minute gift or just needing a great pair of shoes for a night out on the town, GreenStreet has you covered literally from head to toe! In addition to offering some of the latest fashion finds from national retailers such as Forever XXI and BCBGMAXAZRIA, the downtown shopping and entertainment destination continues to feature a variety of custom and specialty fashion items from mobile style mavens Basiques, Shoe Bar, Urban Izzy and Park Boutique. The fashion trucks will be parked onsite along the front entrance of ForeverXXI, just off of Main between Dallas and Polk. The boutiques on wheels will rotate each day, Tuesdays through Fridays.
